Excite uses a sophisticated search engine that lists search results by relevance (i.e. results closest to your search criteria are listed first and ranked highest). Excite also categorizes resources by "channel."

Possibly the most comprehensive search system for the Internet, Alta Vista catalogs USENET newsgroup postings as well as Web sites. Alta Vista also supports advanced Boolean queries.
