One of the very first systems for searching the Web, Yahoo! organizes resources by category, and gives "hot site" awards to particularly outstanding sites. In addition to searching automatically, you can browse the categories manually.

Excite

Excite uses a sophisticated search engine that lists search results by relevance (i.e. results closest to your search criteria are listed first and ranked highest). Excite also categorizes resources by "channel."
