MINNEAPOLIS-The National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) has facilitated its first cord blood stem cell transplant.
According to the NMDP, its registry is the only database in the world that contains information on both volunteer unrelated donors and stored umbilical cord blood units.
"It provides a single point of access for all sources of blood stem cells used in transplant patients. For the first time, one registry is able to search its own database and provide physicians with information on multiple stem cell sources for life-saving transplants," Dr. Dennis Confer, chief medical officer for NMDP, said at www.marrow-donor.org/WHATSNEWS/SYB_NEWS/stories/cord02112000.html.
The NMDP was founded in 1986 and facilitated its first bone marrow transplant the following year. It now handles more than 100 marrow and blood stem cell donations monthly. The registry lists about 4 million volunteers who are willing to donate bone marrow or blood stem cells.
