Virginia OPOs Merge

CITY · May 1, 2000· by TNN Medical Reporter Virginia Baskerville

Richmond, Va.-Two Virginia organ procurement organizations have merged, forming the 20th largest of 59 OPOs certified by the Health Care Finance Administration to provide hospitals with procurement services.

The OPO LifeNet was poised on May 1 to take over territory previously served by Virginias' Organ Procurement Agency. VOPA's territory included Charlottesville and southwestern Virginia; LifeNet served central and eastern Virginia. With the merger, LifeNet will provide services to more than 4.5 million people, 75 hospitals, and five transplant centers. Offices will be located in Roanoke, Lynchburg, Charlottesville, Winchester, Richmond, and Virginia Beach.

"LifeNet has historically been one of the OPOs performing at higher than average levels as reported by the American Association of Organ Procurement Organizations as measured by donors recovered per million population," LifeNet said in a statement.
