Business News from Eon Labs, SangStat, Thoratec

CITY · May 1, 2000· by TNN Medical Reporter Virginia Baskerville

Recent business news has been reported from Eon Labs Manufacturing, SangStat, and Thoratec Laboratories.

* Eon Labs Manufacturing (www.tylus.com/eonlabs) of Laurelton, N.Y. announced that it began a copromotion in April with the Myland Pharmaceuticals to detail Eon's cyclosporine softgel capsule to hospitals in the brand equivalent strengths of 25 mg and 100 mg. The product was approved by the Food and Drug Administration earlier this year. Eon Labs has been positioning its cyclosporine as a less expensive alternative to Novartis's Neoral.

* SangStat, The Transplant Company (www.sangstat.com), of Fremont, Calif., said it has reached an agreement with Finova Capital Corporation that will provide the company with a $30 million line of credit. SangStat's products include SangCya, an oral cyclosporine solution; Thymoglobulin, an antithymocyte rabbit immunoglobulin for the treatment of acute graft rejection in kidney transplant patients; and Celsior cold storage solution.

* The medical device company Thoratec Laboratories (www.thoratec.com) of Pleasanton, Calif., reported that product sales for the first quarter of 2000 increased more than 41% over sales for the first quarter of 1999. The company attributed the increase, in part, to growth in the market for the company's ventricular assist device (VAD) system. Thoratec recently announced that its VAD was implanted using minimally invasive surgery in two patients who later received transplanted hearts-marking what the company believes is the first such operations (www.centerspan.org/tnn/0003015.htm).
