Health Status of Live Kidney Donors

NORFOLK, Va.: October 1, 2000 · by TNN Medical Reporter
Virginia Baskerville
- Under a newly announced program, living kidney donors will be able to
have their health status tracked and protected after donating the
kidney.
The South-Eastern Organ Procurement Foundation (SEOPF), an
association of transplant-related professional organizations in 19 states,
announced the formation of the Living Organ Donor Network during a meeting on
September 15. Under the program, "information regarding living kidney donors
will, for the first time, be placed in a common database so medial
professionals can collect demographic and medical characteristics of these
individuals. In addition, donors at participating transplant centers will be
provided with a safety net in the form of life, disability, and medical
insurance for complications which might arise from being a living-related or
unrelated kidney donor," SEOPF said in a statement.
Sentara Norfolk
General Hospital in Virginia is the first hospital in the country to take part
in the program. SEOPF plans to offer the Living Organ Donor Network program to
all kidney transplant centers in the country. The foundation is also
investigating extending similar coverage to liver donors.
SEOPF secured
coverage for the program through AIG Insurance, which underwrites coverage for
donors in the National Bone Marrow Donor Program, upon which the Living Organ
Donor Network is modeled.
