ISAtx247 Promising in First Phase of Trial

EDMONTON, Canada - November 15, 2000· by TNN Medical Reporter Virginia Baskerville
- Preliminary results of a phase 1C study of a candidate immunosuppressive drug called
ISAtx247 have shown that the drug had no adverse effect on kidney function.
"As kidney toxicity is the major side effect of other immunosuppressive drugs such
as cyclosporine, our findings are very significant to the transplantation and autoimmune
community. These results are consistent with all our studies performed to date that
confirm the reduced toxicity of ISAtx247," said Dr. Randall Yatscoff, president of
Isotechnika Inc. of Edmonton, a life sciences company whose lead drug is ISAtx247.
The clinical trial, which is being conducted by Covance Inc. of Madison, Wisconsin,
involves the administration of the drug for seven days at three different doses to
healthy men and women. The first dosing series of 2 mg/kg/day has been completed,
with all patients tolerating the drug well with no significant adverse effects, Isotechnika
said in a statement on October 30. The phase 1C study is expected to be completed by the end
of the year.
In addition to its role in the prevention of organ rejection after transplantation,
ISAtx247 is being studied for the treatment of autoimmune diseases. "The properties of
this drug exhibited in the animal models bode well for the use of TAStx247 in the treatment
of rheumatoid arthritis in humans," said Dr. Walter Maksymowych, of the University of Alberta
in a separate statement issued by Isotechnika on November 7.
The company also hopes to develop ISAtx247 for use in psoriasis and type 1 diabetes.
