Southern Florida Gets New Kidney Transplant Program
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - November 15, 2000· by TNN Medical Reporter Virginia Baskerville

A new kidney transplantation program has come to southern Florida.
On November 1, Daniel Shoskes, MD, performed the first adult kidney transplant in Broward County at Cleveland Clinic Florida. The transplantation team is working with 41 additional patients who are ready for surgery.
"It is impressive that although the program is so new, we are already working with so many patients for surgery; it demonstrates that there was a significant need for an additional transplant program," said Dr. Shoskes. The nearest other kidney transplantation program is in Miami, and others are located in Fort Myers, Orlando, and Tampa.
"Southern Florida has been clearly underserved in terms of kidney transplantation and needed more than one transplant center," said Harry K. Moon, MD, chief executive officer of Cleveland Clinic Florida.
The first kidney recipient at the clinic, a 42-year-old man, was listed in good condition two days following surgery.
