BioTransplant Continues MGH Collaboration; Acquires Eligix
BioTransplant Incorporated and Massachusetts General Hospital's Transplantation Biology Research Center have entered into a five-year agreement that renews their collaborative research in the transplantation of organs, tissues, and cells.
"The ultimate goals of the collaboration are to pioneer new approaches to prevent the need for long-term immunosuppressive treatment in the transplantation of human organs and enable functional tolerance of these transplanted tissues and organs," BioTransplant said in a statement.
Under the terms of the agreement, BioTransplant will continue to fund some of the research of Massachusetts General Hospital scientists, including David Sachs, Megan Sykes, and A. Benedict Cosimi. The hospital, in turn, has granted BioTransplant exclusive worldwide royalty-bearing rights to technology and inventions developed in the course of BioTransplant's funded research. * In other business, BioTransplant announced on December 11 that it has agreed to acquire
Eligix Incorporated, a privately held biomedical device company. The transaction is expected
to close in the first quarter of 2001. Products under development by Eligix include
high-density microparticles with monoclonal antibodies on their surfaces, which can remove
unwanted cells from blood and bone marrow, such as cells that cause graft-versus-host disease.

* At the recent annual meeting of the American Society for Hematology, BioTransplant and
Massachusetts General Hospital reported the results of a number of studies dealing with the
use of nonmyeloablative conditioning in preparation for bone marrow transplantation in
patients with advanced refractory blood cancers.
