UPMC Marks 20th Anniversary of its First Liver Transplant

More than 11,300 transplants of all kinds later, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center marked the 20th anniversary of its first liver transplant on February 26.

In press releases describing the medical center's progress over the past 20 years, UPMC lauded the work of transplant pioneer Thomas E. Starzl, MD, PhD, who performed the center's first liver transplant and has made a host of other contributions since. "The extraordinary impact of Dr. Starzl's work can be seen in the fact that forms of organ transplantation that were viewed as medical miracles just 20 years ago now are an accepted part of medical practice throughout the country and around the world," UPMC said.
