Indian State Outlaws Organ Trade

NEW DELHI, India · July 1, 1998 · by TNN Medical Reporter Virginia Baskerville

A state in India has made trading in humans organs illegal, the Associated Press reported on June 15.

The action came after three surgeons were arrested in May after they allegedly paid poor persons for their kidneys and then sold them to rich patients. While recipients can pay $6,000 to $10,000 for a kidney and transplant surgery, donors can receive about $1,000, or more than a year's salary for a rural laborer, the Associated Press said.

"The case was one of the rare occasions where evidence of organ theft, rumored around the world, was strong enough to prompt legal proceedings," the Associated Press reported.
