At the 17th World Congress of the Transplantation Society, F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd. announced the establishment of a foundation dedicated to improving outcomes for organ transplant patients.
Roche has pledged 25 million Swiss francs to the nonprofit Roche Organ Transplant Research Foundation, which will be distributed over the next five years as grants to researchers around the world.
One of the priority areas for funding is research aimed at improving the long-term survival of transplanted organs. Other research areas will include ways of improving tissue matching between organ donors and recipients, better techniques for preserving organs awaiting transplantation, and the induction of tolerance-conditioning of the immune system to accept an organ without the need for immunosuppressive drugs. Roche said that human cloning research would not be considered.
