First Recipient of Triple Transplant Dies 12 Years Later

CAMBRIDGE, England · September 1, 1998 · by TNN Medical Reporter Virginia Baskerville

The world's first known recipient of a triple transplant has died 12 years following the pioneering operation.

Davina Thompson, who received a new heart, lungs, and liver in 1986, died at the age of 47 on August 13 at Papworth Hospital in Cambridge.

Mrs. Thompson's operation "was generally considered a success and led the way for other triple transplants," the Associated Press reported on August 17. The Associated Press said that Mrs. Thompson was in good health for most of the past 12 years, but her condition began to deteriorate over the past few months.
