Transplant surgeon Nicholas Sears has left Tampa General Hospital to join Abiomed, Inc.
As director of clinical support, Dr. Sears will help support customers of Abiomed's BVS-5000 temporary external artificial heart assist device and will help to refine the implantation protocol for Abiomed's implantable replacement heart device in preparation for clinical trials. At Tampa General Hospital in Florida, he was co-director of the heart transplant program and an attending cardiac surgeon.
"I am extremely pleased to be working with Abiomed to expand the application of cardiac assist and heart replacement technology," Dr. Sears said. "An implantable replacement heart device has for decades been a dream of cardiac surgeons. Abiomed is well positioned to make this dream a reality."
Abiomed said that Dr. Sears will work with Abiomed's clinical team to ensure that "customers are trained and effective in saving lives with the BVS-5000."
