Synercid Approved in the United Kingdom

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. · August 15, 1999 · by TNN Medical Reporter Virginia Baskerville

Synercid, the first injectable antibiotic in the streptogramin class of antibacterials, has been approved in the United Kingdom for use in patients with nosocomial pneumonia, skin and soft tissue infections, and infections due to Enterococcus faecium when there is no other active antibacterial agent.

The drug's maker, Rhône-Poulenc Rorer, has also filed a new drug application for Synercid (quinupristin/dalfopristin) with the Food and Drug Administration in the United States.

"Synercid is great news for physicians," said Gary French, MD, of Guy's King's College in London. "We now have a much-needed alternative weapon to treat often deadly infections that strike some of the most vulnerable patients, including transplant recipients, patients in intensive care units, cancer patients receiving chemotherapy, patients with compromised immune systems, and patients who are catheterized for feeding or administering medication."
