Montefiore Medical Center, the university hospital for Albert Einstein College of Medicine, has been granted permission by the New York State Department of Health to establish a heart transplant center.
The center is expected to serve both adults and children throughout the New York metropolitan area, Westchester County, and the Hudson Valley.
"This is the capstone for Montefiore's Heart Center. Montefiore has had a rich tradition of excellence in cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery Our designation as a heart transplant center completes the continuum of care for our patients," said Montefiore's president, Spencer Foreman. Montefiore performs more than 1,200 open heart surgeries annually.
Montefiore said in a statement that the new heart transplant program "builds on Montefiore's history as one of the few transplant programs in the United States with more than 30 years of experience in renal transplantation."
