The only two recipients of hand transplants in the United States-both of whom lost their hands in fireworks accidents-are scheduled to set off what has been billed as the largest fireworks display in America.
On April 21, Matthew D. Scott and Jerry Fisher are expected to use their new left hands to push the buttons that will ignite the Kentucky Derby Festival "Thunder Over Louisville."
"We thought it was fitting that these two men--better than anyone--could reinforce the message that fireworks should be left to the professionals. These men…will have come full circle in igniting the largest annual fireworks show in the United States," said festival president Mike Berry on April 4 at a press conference at Jewish Hospital, where Mr. Scott and Mr. Fisher underwent their hand transplants.
Mr. Scott received his hand transplant in January 1999 and Mr. Fisher in February 2001. In the six weeks following his operation, Mr. Fisher experienced three rejection episodes, which were treated with medication and resolved, lead transplant surgeon Darla Granger, MD, of the University of Louisville reported at the press conference. The rejection episodes were not as serious as those experienced by Mr. Scott following his transplant, she said.
According to physical therapist Laurie Newsome, a milestone is Mr. Fisher's progress was reached when he could lift a water bottle, pour the water into the glass, and drink from the glass. Mr. Fisher also has been able to iron and fold a shirt with two hands. "He has excellent early function," Ms. Newsome said.
In the two years since Mr. Scott's operation, he has developed hot and cold sensation in his transplanted hand and is able to perform activities such as picking up his children, opening a car door, turning doorknobs, drinking from a glass, dialing a cell phone, writing his name, and tying his shoes.
